VIDEO: Hard crash in F3 qualifying! Russian racer Bedrin crashes into the wall and completely destroys his monoposto
Formula 3 is running its second round of the season this weekend, with drivers and teams already having completed Friday’s qualifying. Gabriel Bortoleto has secured his first pole position. However, it was F3 qualifying that also offered plenty of crashes, with Russian driver Nikita Bedrin suffering probably the most severe.
Friday’s Formula 3 qualifying at Australia’s Albert Park circuit was dominated by Gabriel Bortoleto with a time of 1:33.025.
It should be noted that the 18-year-old Brazilian driver is a complete newcomer to F3, racing for the same team that Roman Stanek drove for last year – Trident.
During qualifying, he was knocked off the top spot for a few moments by Franco Colapinto, but Bortoleto reclaimed the top spot.
Gregoire Saucy, the second rider of the ART team, will be the second rider on the grid for the main race on Sunday. Gabriele Mini (Hitech) will be on the second row, followed by Leonardo Fornaroli (Trident).
It must be added, the Trident team recorded a truly great result on Friday, although Fornaroli lost over three tenths of a second to the winner.
Crashes and red flags
However, there was plenty of crashing in Friday’s Formula 3 qualifying. Red flags had to be displayed shortly after the start when Pepe Marti crashed. The Campos Racing driver cut the chicane at Turns 9 and 10, went over the gravel and hit the barrier.
Arguably the most severe accident, however, was recorded by Russian Jenzer Motorsport’s Nikita Bedrin. He failed to negotiate the last corner and collided hard with the wall.
However, even before this crash, the fans had witnessed more red flags and another interruption of qualifying. Kaylen Frederick also failed to negotiate the last corner and practically parked his wrecked car on the home straight.
