One of the last tournaments of this year’s tennis season has its winners. The WTA 125 event in Angers, France, was won by Alycia Parks, both in singles and doubles. The Czech Republic was also represented in the doubles final, but Kolodziejová and Vondroušová failed to beat the top-seeded pair.
Markéta Vondroušová also tried to succeed in the singles at the indoor event on the hard surface. Although she won her matches against Belgian Wickmayer and Bulgarian Tomova in two sets, she was overtaken in the quarter-finals by the later champion in the same manner.
Parks, a native of Atlanta, who will celebrate her 22nd birthday at the end of the year, was then up against local tennis player Jessica Ponchet. It was a battle that lasted more than two and a half hours, which after a turnaround the American won 4::6, 7::6 and 6::4.
The world number 100 entered the final encounter better, winning the opening set against Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam 6::4. She then lost 4: 6 to the WTA number 146 player, but again dominated the deciding set 6: 4.
Alycia Parks had a busy Sunday afternoon, as she played alongside Zhang Shuai in the doubles final a short time later. In it, besides Vondroušová, they were also facing her compatriot Miriam Kolodziejová.
The pairs didn’t stay on the court for long as it was only an hour-long duel. The American-Chinese duo defeated the Czech duo twice 6::2 and could enjoy the trophy.
Parksová thus achieved a valuable double in the west of France. It also underscored the successful end of the 2022 season for the player, as she triumphed in singles at the same level tournament in Andorra a week ago.
The WTA circuit has one more event on the schedule this year with a $125,000 subsidy. From 11 to 17 December, it is also played in the Gallic Cockatoo country, with Limoges as the host venue this time.
