Novak Djokovic, at thirty-five years old, is only eighth in the ATP rankings, but this is due to his long break. Despite this, he is the biggest favourite to win the Tournament of Champions overall.
In the calendar year 2022, Djokovic has played 46 competitive matches, finding an opponent only seven times. This confirms that he remains one of the world’s elite. The proof can be seen in his triumph at Wimbledon, where unfortunately no points were awarded for him in the ATP rankings.
In the opening duel at the Tournament of Champions, he handled Stefanos Tsitsipas without any major problems after sets 6::4 and 7::6, offering his opponent only one break point opportunity. In his duel with Andrey Rublev, he gave an even more convincing performance, winning 6:4 and 6:1. This secured him first place in the Red Group.
His semi-final opponent will be Taylor Fritz, currently the ninth man in the ATP rankings. This year he has had the best season of his career so far. He managed to win 45 matches, while he left the court as a loser only 20 times.
During his debut appearance at the final event of the season, he managed to defeat Rafael Nadal (7::6 and 6::1) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (7::6, 6::7 and 6::2) in a direct duel for promotion from the Green Group. However, due to an inferior duel with Casper Ruud, he finished in second place.
Novak Djokovic is a relatively big favourite for Saturday’s contest. The two players have met five times in the past and it was the Serbian tennis player who won the match. Moreover, only at the Australian Open did Fritz manage to win at least one set.
