Casper Ruud will face Andrey Rublev in the final of the Tournament of Champions. The Russian tennis player is the paper favourite, but he will not have an easy task. So we can expect a very interesting match.
Casper Ruud is a 23-year-old tennis player from Norway. He is currently ranked fourth in the ATP rankings, but if he manages to win the final event of the year, he would move up to second place.
Ruud’s biggest successes have come on clay, where he has dominated events in Buenos Aires, Geneva and Gstaad this year. However, he has also made significant progress on the hard surface, where he has won 23 of his 35 competitive matches.
At the Tournament of Champions, he was drawn in the Green Group along with Nadal, Fritz and Auger-Aliassime. He advanced from the first place after his opening two wins, so Thursday’s loss to Nadal may not have bothered him too much.
Andrey Rublev will be his opponent in the semi-finals. The 25-year-old Russian is currently seventh in the ATP rankings. Advancing to the final could see him move ahead of compatriot Daniil Medvedev and become the number one Russian.
The hard surface is the favourite for the Moscow native. In the 2022 calendar year, he won tournaments in Dubai, Marseille and Gijon. In total, he scored 37 victories here, with only 12 defeats.
In the Red Group he played together with Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and the aforementioned Daniil Medvedev. His progress was decided only in a direct duel with the Greek tennis player, whom he defeated after sets 3::6, 6::3 and 6::2.
Andrey Rublev is a slight favourite. The players have met six times in the past, with the Russian winning five duels. In their last match, however, Ruud won the match, coincidentally at the Tournament of Champions last year. Given the current form of both players, he could add a second win today.
