The final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup 2022 is taking place in the Scottish capital Glasgow these days. Its first group opponents were the Polish women, who are missing their biggest star Iga Świąteková. After the singles, the overall score was even, with the deciding point then going to the doubles duo of Kateřina Siniaková, Markéta Vondroušová.
Karolína Muchová, who has been falling down the rankings this year due to injuries and a small number of tournaments played, started the Czech national team’s participation in the event.
The native of Olomouc, who is currently ranked 149th, challenged Magdalena Frechová, also a player in the second 100 of the singles rankings.
The 26-year-old Czech did well in the match. She managed to take her opponent’s serve twice in both sets, and after an hour and a quarter she celebrated a set win with an identical score of 6:2.
After that, Karolina Pliskova, who is currently 32nd in the WTA rankings, took the court. She faced Magda Linette, seventeen places lower.
The former world number one did not win her second Czech point as she lost 4::6 and 1::6, making 38 unforced errors compared to 18 by the Pole.
The doubles match had to be decided by Markéta Vondroušová, who played alongside WTA doubles ruler Kateřina Siniaková.
On the other side of the court in the adjacent hall, which is the Chris Hoy Velodrome, stood Katarzyna Kawa and again Linette.
Once again it was a two-set match, with the Czech being the winning pair. The opening set ended with a score of 6::2, and in the following one the Czech players used their fourth match point to win 6::3.
In Group D, the Czech Republic and the USA will play each other for the only qualification place. The game should be played from 5 pm our time on Friday. Live coverage will be broadcast by CT Sport.
