The twenty-second round of the US Formula One Grand Prix produced a big crash between Canadian Stroll and Spaniard Alonso on the straight between turns 11 and 12.
It should be noted the starting field was banged together at that point, as Valtteri Bottas had retired from the race a few moments earlier. The Finnish driver failed to control his car on the exit of turn 19 and ended up in a duck.
He became the second driver to retire from the US Grand Prix, as Carlos Sainz dropped out after the first lap due to a collision with George Russell.
However, after Bottas’ Alfa Romeo was caught in the duck, the safety car was forced to take to the track and pitted at the end of lap 21. Subsequently, however, the aforementioned accident between Stroll and Alonso occurred, which you can see for yourself in the attached video below.
The responsibility for causing the collision in this case goes primarily to the Canadian driver. Alonso was using a slip stream, or air pocket behind the other car, which made the Spanish driver faster and made him want to overtake Stroll.
However, the latter decided at the last moment to take a defensive manoeuvre and did not give Alonso a chance to react. The Spanish legend’s Alpine even took off with the front wheels for a moment, but fortunately there was no major moment.
Yellow flags immediately waved on the track and once again the fans witnessed the safety car exit. Round 37 is currently underway at Circuit of The Americas and Sergio Pérez is leading the US Grand Prix.
