Good news for Czech fans. Petra Kvitova will finally play in Ostrava
Last minute, but still. The WTA 500 tournament in Ostrava is approaching and today another name was added to the list of starters, which will surely make Czech fans happy. Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová confirmed her participation in the biggest indoor tournament in the country on Thursday.
This year’s edition, officially called Agel Open 2022, will already have a very strong line-up. The world number one Iga Šwiateková will come to Ostrava, and last year’s winner Anett Kontaveitová and her challenger Maria Sakkariová will also be present. World number three Paula Badosa and Beijing Olympic champion Belinda Bencic have also confirmed their participation.
“I waited until the last minute to see what my health condition and the schedule of the next tournaments would be. Since I am feeling better and the Ostrava tournament is close to my hometown, I took the opportunity to compete in the wild card event.
The former world number two has been struggling with a wrist injury during the summer and has not played in any tournament since the US Open semi-finals. She will be one of five home representatives in the main event at the heavily-attended tournament.
In addition to her, Karolina Pliskova, Barbora Krejcikova, Karolina Muchova and Tereza Martincova will also be in action on home court. Linda Noskova will fight for another place in the qualification.
Qualification for the tournament in Ostrava starts this weekend, and the main competition will begin on 3 October.
