The 2022 US Open has a final weekend on the schedule, after which we will know the names of all the new champions of the New York Grand Slam. One of the highlights of the tournament took place on Saturday from 10pm our time. The women’s singles final pitted Iga Świąteková and Ons Džabúrová against each other.
It was a duel between the world number one and the fifth player in the WTA rankings. The Pole secured her participation in the clash for the trophy by successfully reversing the unfavourable development of the semi-final duel with Aryna Sabalenka, the Tunisian with a quick two-set win over Caroline Garcia.
Świąteková could reach her second triumph of the ‘Big Four’ tournaments this year after she dominated Roland Garros in June. She entered the match against the Wimbledon finalist this year well, as she took away Dzabur’s first serve and soon led 3:0.
The North African tennis player then reduced the opening set to one game, but then lost her serve for the second time. The twenty-one-year-old Polish star won the set 6:2.
Djaburova’s game woes, which in many cases were not even supported by her favourite “shorts”, also continued in the second act. The opening of the second game looked the same as in the first – Świąteková again won the opening three games.
The same pattern continued, as the Tunisian again adjusted the score to 2: 3, after which the Pole took back her one break lead. This time, however, the twenty-eight-year-old Tunisian was able to recover, close the gap and level the match at 4::4.
The second set was a dramatic spectacle, culminating in a tiebreak. Iga Świąteková, who became the first Polish winner of the women’s singles at the US Open, won the shortened game 7::5. The Krakow native claimed the third Grand Slam title of her career.
On Saturday evening, Czech tennis also celebrated success as Lucie Havlíčková and her Russian teammate Diana Šnajderová won the junior doubles final. They defeated the Germans Kuhl and Seidel 6: 3 and 6: 2. Before that, the 17-year-old Czech lost to Alexandra Eala of the Philippines after 2:6 and 4:6 sets.
