Second day of play at the US Open: the Czech Republic has no representative in the second round! Six women continue!
The second day of the US Open, or the second part of the first round, meant the end for the last Czech in the pool, Jiri Vesely. The rest of the women also fought their way to the next part of the tournament. Krejcikova was joined in the second day by Bouzkova, Furhvirtova, Kvitova, Pliskova and Siniakova.

Czech track
The only man from the Czech Republic who held the last hope for the second round yesterday was Jiri Vesely. He faced Daniel Evans and although the first set looked quite even and ended 4::6, the next two sets were on the contrary unequivocal and ended in Jiri’s disadvantage both 1::6.
Tuesday’s game day started with the Czech derby. Marie Bouzkova and the young hope Linda Noskova fought their expected duel. Considering the amount of experience Marie already had, she was the favourite in the match. But Linda certainly didn’t give it away for free. The match ended 6::2 6::7 and 6::2 in Bouzkova’s favour.
Linda Fruhvirt made her debut at an adult Grand Slam and immediately turned her debut into the second round. She defeated China’s Wang 6: 3 and 6: 4. Linda was not hiding her excitement and joy after the win!
So dramatically, as perhaps only our Karolina Pliskova can do. That’s exactly how her opening round duel with Linette went. After sets 6::2 and 4::6, the deciding set followed, which went to a tiebreak with 10 winning balls. In that match, Karolina was already leading 7::2, but to make it exciting, she let her opponent turn it around to 7::8, and then she was able to win 10::8 and celebrate the progress.
Petra Kvitova is the next player to advance. The latter had a slower start to the match, but by the end of the first set it was clear to see how the Czech Lioness was getting up to operating temperature and how the match would develop further. Petra was already down 4:1, but she finally took the set in the tiebreak and gave Andreeva a canary in the second set.
The last player to advance is Katerina Siniakova. Against the odds, she managed to fight against the crowd together with the home team’s Townsend. After sets 4::6 6::4 and 2::6, Katerina also enjoys advancing to the second round!
Overview of the favourites
Next up is Cameron Norrie as Paire showed his complete instability against him again, taking the match 6::0, 7::6 and 6::0. The match of the world number four, Spain’s Alcaraz, was also smooth. However, the Argentine Baez broke the match in the third set.
Clearly, 3::0 on sets also goes on Hurkacz, as seeded number 8, who dealt with Otto. Also seeded number two, Rafael Nadal continues in the tournament after a 3: 1 win over Hijikata.
World number one seeded Iga Swiatek also had a smooth entry into the tournament. She clearly defeated the Italian Paolini 6: 3 and 6: 0. World No. 8 Pegula also goes further. On the other hand, Rybakina, as the winner of this year’s Wimbledon, finished second.
The lovely Andrea Petkovic ended her career here at the US Open. She entered the circuit in 2006 and has collected 8 titles to date. Now, at the age of 34, the long-time TOP100 member is ending her eventful career. She said goodbye with a fighting performance against Belinda Bencic, but not victorious. She left the court in tears.
The defending champion from last year, Emma Raducanu, also said goodbye to the tournament at the very beginning. She was no match for the brilliant Alize Cornet. The controversial Osaka didn’t even make it past the first round, sent home in two sets by Danielle Rose Collins, much to the delight of the home fans.
Upcoming schedule
Barbora Krejcikova will play her second round match against Aleksandra Krunicova today at 22:30. The other Czechs will play tomorrow. Siniakova will face Alize Cornetova, Kvitova Kalinin. Linda Furhvirtova will face Muguruza and the Czech derby will be on the schedule again. Karolina Pliskova will challenge Maria Bouzkova. The times of these matches are to be announced.
