Federer will be starting from scratch on his return! Just like 25 years ago when he first appeared on the ATP rankings. What does that mean?
One of the greatest tennis legends, or perhaps the greatest for a quarter of a century, has left the ATP rankings. Roger Federer lost his last points after Wimbledon and fell to zero. It was at the All England Club that he last played a year ago. If we are to see him return, as he keeps promising, we will have to start again from scratch.
One of the greatest legends of tennis, or maybe the greatest ever, has left the ATP rankings after a quarter of a century. Roger Federer lost his last points after Wimbledon and fell to zero. It was at the All England Club that he last played a year ago. If we see him return, as he keeps promising, we will have to start again from scratch.
He scored his first points on September 22, 1997. They earned him a then-ranked 803rd. He made an indelible mark on the history of the sport during his career. For many years he held the record for the most weeks as world number one, sitting on the Swiss throne for 310 weeks. The record was taken over by Djokovic, who has so far spent 373 weeks at the top.
But the longest streak as world number one without interruption clearly belongs to Federer. It started on February 2, 2004 and was interrupted after more than 4 years, on August 17, 2008. Between 2002 and 2016, he was a continuous member of the top 10. All his numbers are breathtaking. He has won 103 tournaments on the ATP singles circuit, including 20 Grand Slams.
We would be here for a really long time if we wanted to discuss the entire career of the legendary FedeX. However, it is premature to conclude his player’s account. He himself is planning a comeback. He last spoke to the nation at this year’s Wimbledon Centre Court Anniversary celebrations.
Coming on court, not as a player, he said “I feel weird”. Then during the interview he also said, “ I hope to come back here again. I miss it.” The Swiss underwent another surgery on his right knee and the recovery was unexpectedly prolonged.
The current plan is to play the Laver Cup and a home tournament in Basel later this year. After that, he should prepare for the 2023 season. He has to rely on wild cards from the organizers of the various tournaments, because he will not be invited anywhere via the ranking list.
