Probably few would have expected two weeks ago that Elina Rybakina would play the Wimbledon final. The 23-year-old Kazakh tennis player is currently ranked 23rd in the WTA rankings. Her best position is the twelfth position from January this year.
Moreover, her preparation for the peak of the grass season has not been quite to her liking. In Hertogenbosch, she had a tough time with Loeb, after which she fell short to Rogers. In Eastbourne, she dropped her opener to Tsurenko’s racket.
At Wimbledon, however, she began to show a diametrically different performance. She successively knocked out Vandeweghe, Andreescu, Zheng, Martic, Tomljanovic and Halep. She lost only one set on her way to the final.
Her opponent on Saturday will be Ons Jabeur. The 27-year-old from Tunisia is the first player from North Africa to play in a Wimbledon final. She is ranked second in the WTA rankings.
Her participation in the final is not such a surprise. She chose the tournament in Berlin as a dress rehearsal before Wimbledon, which she managed to win without much difficulty. At the height of the grass season, she found a recipe for beating Mertens, Bouzkova and Mari.
Jabeur is the slight favourite to win the match, leading 2:1 in the statistics. But if the match was played, there were always three sets. So we are probably going to have an even match, which could be decided by the Tunisian’s serve.
