When Ashleigh Barty retired, the then 20-year-old Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek became the new world number one. And would she want to give up the top spot just like that? It certainly doesn’t look like it.
the 21-year-old Polish player last found a way past her opponent on February 16th of this year. Since then, she’s won 35 matches in a row. She dominated Roland Garros, winning here for the second time in her career on Saturday.
Shwiatek has already won in Paris in 2020. These are her only two Grand Slam titles. But judging by her current form, it’s safe to assume they will be far from her last.
During the French Open, the Pole lost a single set. It happened in the eighth round. Otherwise, she’s been utterly dominant. In the final, she beat 18-year-old Coco Gauff 6-1 and 6-3.
This is the sixth tournament in a row that Shwiatek has won. It’s a phenomenal achievement. 35 wins in a row to equal Venus Williams’ record. She was the only tennis player to achieve a streak of 35 wins in a row since the millennium.
The Pole has lost only three matches this year. Back in January she was beaten by Barty in Adelaide, in the semi-finals of the Australian Open she was no match for Danielle Rose Collins, and in Dubai she lost to Jelena Ostapenko.
