For the first time in her career, the young Czech prospect presented herself at a major WTA tournament, where she received a wild card after her great performances at ITF tournaments. Marie Bouzkova also made an appearance in the first round.
Fruvirtova came through qualifying in style. First, she took on former world number five Sara Errani of Italy in the first qualifying round and secured her ticket to the main draw with a dominant performance against Switzerland’s Kung.
Waiting for her in the first round was the 57th player in the WTA rankings, American Sloane Stephens. The 2017 US Open winner has played only one match in the new season and that was at the Australian Open, where she lost in the first round. However, she did not falter against the rising Czech star and defeated her in two sets.
Stephens faced two break points on her first serve, but managed to break them both. The fifth and seventh games of the first set were crucial, in which the American converted her break chances to win the first set 6-2.
Right at the beginning of the second set, Fruhvirt lost her serve twice in a row, which proved to be crucial for the further course of the set, which the 28-year-old Stephens dominated as she did in the first – 6-2.
Although Fruhvirt did not advance to the second round in her first appearance at a WTA tournament, she showed what a star she can be in the future. At the age of 14, she is beating much more experienced opponents. She doesn’t have to be too sorry about losing to Stephens, she is gaining valuable experience.
Brenda Fruhvirt (435th) – Sloane Stephens (57th) – 2-6, 2-6
Marie Bouzkova advanced to the second round in Guadalajara, Mexico. She first lost the first set to Japan’s Doi when she failed to take the important tenth game – 4-6. But then the 96th ranked player came back.
First, she had to make up for a lost serve at the beginning of the second set, but she corrected her mistakes and defeated the uncomfortable Japanese player 7-5. In the last, decisive third set, there were 5 lost serves for both players. In the end, the finalist of the 2019 WTA 125 tournament in Guadalajara walked away from a very close set victorious – 6-4.
Misaki Doi (78th) – Marie Bouzkova (96th) – 6-4, 5-7, 4-6
In the next round of the tournament, she will face the qualifier, Italy’s Bronzetti (112th). The match starts tomorrow at 18:00.
