Two nights of terror in an underground garage. Tennis player Jastremska had to flee war-torn Ukraine

The war that broke out in Ukraine after the invasion of Russian troops into its territory directly affects many professional athletes. The Ukrainian tennis player Dajana Jastremska, who, together with her family, hid in an underground garage in her hometown of Odessa, has had a difficult time in recent days. After two days, Jastremska and her younger sister fled the country.

Yastremska and her family went into hiding shortly after Russian troops began their invasion of Ukraine on Wednesday.

Rockets began to rain down on Odessa and deafening explosions rippled through the city. Shortly afterwards, Russian troops also landed in the city and began to occupy Odessa in stages.

The whole family spent two nights in an underground garage, after which the parents of the talented tennis player said enough is enough and decided that both their daughters had to leave the country at any cost.

In fact, the Russians continued to advance throughout Ukraine, and the chances that the Ukrainian army could defend itself were diminishing significantly with each passing day.

The twenty-one-year-old tennis player and her sister eventually escaped on one of the boats on which they joined other people trying to get out of the war zone. Their parents remained in Odessa.

“After spending two nights in an underground garage, my parents decided to send me and my little sister out of Ukraine at any cost. Mom, dad, we love you very much, take care of yourselves!” jastremska wrote on Instagram, where she also posted videos of saying goodbye to her parents and boarding the boat with which she sailed to safety.

Yet until last week, Yastremska was only interested in tennis. At the WTA tournament in Dubai, she managed to make it through from the qualifying round to the quarterfinals, where she lost to Marketa Vondrousova.

After a successful performance in a well-attended tournament, she went home, where she and millions of other Ukrainians were hit by the biggest tragedy since the end of the Second World War.
