Alexander Bublik is a 24-year-old tennis player from Kazakhstan. He is ranked 33rd in the ATP rankings. His career high is 30th position, where he was at the end of February. His biggest weapon is his serve.
This was confirmed at the tournament in Montpellier, where he won his first title on the ATP circuit. Subsequently, he took part in events in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai, but did not get past the second round in any of them.
However, he prepared very well for the prestigious tournament in Indian Wells, which falls under the ATP Masters 1000 category. In the Davis Cup, besides Casper Ruud, he also defeated Viktor Durasovic and was the main contributor to the Kazakh’s advancement.
His opponent on Sunday will be Andy Murray. The thirty-four-year-old Briton is currently almost at the tail end of the elite 100 in the ATP rankings. Probably few people expect the former world number one to make a significant rise.
In India Wells, where he starts on a wild card, he has already played his opening match, in which he met Taro Daniel. He had high hopes of advancing, but after sets of 1::6, 6::2 and 6::4, he was able to enjoy the victory. This brought him to the 700 win mark in his career, a feat only Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have achieved among active tennis players.
He has won both of his previous matches with Bublik. The last time they met was in Rotterdam, where the Briton won 7:6 and 6:4. But now I expect the opposite to happen – Murray didn’t give an ideal performance on Friday (he lost his serve four times) and Bublik may be full of healthy confidence after scalping Ruud.
