This duo just works. Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova have already won three Grand Slam titles and are looking for another. Jakub Mensik also succeeded, advancing to the junior quarterfinals at the Australian Open.
Krejcikova had to recover quickly from Tuesday’s setback when she lost to Madeline Keys in the singles quarterfinals. Moreover, she was not medically fit, so it was uncertain in what condition she would start the doubles.
However, to the happiness of all Czech fans, she pulled herself together and she and her teammate Siniakova got back on track against the Dolehide/Sanders duo. They won the first set 6-2, breaking their opponents’ serve twice, and it was done in just 28 minutes.
In the second set, the set went to a tiebreak, where the Czech tennis players were more successful, winning it 7-3. Krejčíková and Siniakova reached the semi-finals, not losing a single set along the way. For the first time, they had to go to a tiebreak, the maximum number of games played in one set against the Czechs was 4.
In the semifinals, the Czechs will face the Kudermetova/Mertens pair. The duel will be played on Thursday 27 January at 3 am.
Lucie Hradecka will also be in action today. She will play her teammate Gonzalo Escobar in the mixed doubles semifinals at approximately 11:30 am.
Four Czech tennis hopefuls were also in action at the Australian Open juniors. Both ladies unfortunately finished in the eighth round, Dominika Šalková fell to Michaela Laki of Greece, Tereza Valenta was not able to keep up with the Australian Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz.
In the men’s junior semi-finals two Czechs were also represented. Jakub Nicod unfortunately failed to beat the Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, but Jakub Mensik scored. The sixth player on the junior rankings defeated Australian Hayden Jones 6-2 and 6-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the junior Australian Open. There he will face Russian Yaroslav Demin.
