Now that was something! Félix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev had one of the best games of the season so far. The young Canadian was leading 2:0 and even had a match point in the fourth set, but he couldn’t hold his nerve and the Russian turned it around to 3:2 and is in the semifinals.
This match promised a very interesting spectacle. Auger-Aliassime has been the dark horse of the tournament, his performances at the Australian Open have been impressive. On the other side stood the second tennis player of the ATP ranking and the biggest favourite of the tournament Daniil Medvedev.
the 21-year-old Canadian started off well. He was clearly the better player on the court, executed the prepared tactics perfectly, had a lot of confidence on the net, and troubled Medvedev, who didn’t know how to handle him, with his cannon backhand and lifted forehand.
Thus, Auger-Aliassime dominated the first set in the tiebreak and even won the second set 6-3. He took a 2-0 lead and came very close to knocking out the tournament’s biggest favourite.
The third set went to a tiebreak again, which Félix did not manage. He lost it 2-7, but in the fourth set he again showed a great performance. Medvedev hadn’t seen a match in a long time where he didn’t know how to handle his opponent.
In the fourth set, at 5:4 on Medvedev’s serve, the score was 30:40. Aliassime had a match point, which he didn’t convert. From then on, the Russian tennis player’s confidence climbed again to the maximum and did not fall again.
In the next game Medvedev took his opponent’s serve and then completed the set at 7-5. After three and three-quarters hours the score was 2-2 and it was on to the fifth and deciding set.
Both tennis players first gained their serve, but then Auger-Aliassime lost his serve and that’s where the match broke. Medvedev then just guarded his serve, but the match was not completely decided.
At 5::4 Medvedev went to serve for the win, but all of a sudden the score was 15::40 and the young Canadian had two break points. However, he didn’t take advantage of them and the world number two reached the semi-finals after four and a half hours.
There he will play the fourth-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas. The other finalist will come from the pair of Rafael Nadal – Matteo Berretini.
