Red flags, race abandoned early! VC Algarve brought a serious accident, 5 drivers did not see the finish

The penultimate round of the MotoGP royal cubature brought a serious accident between Miguel Oliveira and Iker Lecuona. The race was thus brought to a premature end via red flags. Five riders also failed to see the finish, including the recent champion, Fabio Quartara. But we also know the new champion among the teams!

The Algarve Grand Prix was clearly dominated by Francesco Bagnaia, which also confirmed Ducati’s championship title among the constructors!

The Best Non-Factory Rider for the 2021 season was also announced, with the Best Independent Driver award going to Johann Zarco of the Pramac Racing team.

Bagnaiu was joined on the podium by Joan Mir (Suzuki Ecstar) and his teammate, Jack Miller. The latter thus confirmed his position in the Drivers’ Championship with this second place, while last year’s World Champion will be third in the standings this season.

Fabio Quartararo was already crowned World Champion last week, with Bagnaia finishing second. However, the other positions are still undecided, with the final showdown taking place at the next, and it should be noted last, Valencia Grand Prix.

In a week’s time, we will finish the 2021 season with this race, and we can already say that it has been a very attractive and in many ways exceptional season.

But back to the race at Portimao. Both Ducati motorcycles clearly showed their strength here, while Quartararo and his Yamaha failed to finish. We must note, however, that this was the Frenchman’s first crash of the season!

He did pass Jorge Martin on lap 21, moving him up to sixth, but he went too fast into turn 5, and missed the apex and closed the front. As a result, he crashed and did not continue in the Algarve Grand Prix.

However, a much more serious collision happened on lap twenty-four, when KTM riders Lecuona and Oliveira collided with each other.

The latter was subsequently unable to get up and had to be carried away on a stretcher. Lecuona, however, set a fine example of fair play and knelt by the Portuguese rider throughout. On the other hand, there is nothing to be surprised at.

Firstly, the two riders work closely together within the teams, and secondly, it was clearly Lecuona’s fault. Oliveira didn’t see him coming into the corner. The incident continued to be investigated after the race.

According to the latest information, the 26-year-old Portuguese driver is conscious but has been taken to the Medical Centre for further tests.

It should be noted, Lecuona is bidding farewell to the Moto GP royal cubature as he failed to fight for his seat and will be sidelined for the next edition due to poor results. Danilo Petrucci, who crashed on the opening lap of the race, will also say goodbye to Moto GP.

Aleix Espargaro is the fifth rider not to see the finish. Not a good race weekend for Aprilia, with Espargaro crashing and Maverick Viñales finishing only 16th.

The Honda Respol team also had a disappointing result, with Pol Espargaro finishing sixth and Bradl only fifteenth. Marc Márquez was unfortunately unable to take part in the Algarve Grand Prix, having suffered a concussion in practice.
