A noticeable loss for the J&T Banka Ostrava Open 2021 tennis tournament. World No.3 Karolina Pliskova cancelled her participation due to wrist problems. The quarterfinalist of the just finished US Open will not play for at least three weeks.
“It’s not exactly easy to excuse yourself from participating in a tournament that is played in front of spectators and in a home environment. I’m very sorry. I really felt the support of a lot of people from the Czech Republic in the last few months,” said the Wimbledon finalist.
This is not the first time that Pliskova’s wrist has hurt before the quarterfinals of the US Open. Missing the tournament in Ostrava is mainly a precautionary measure after a difficult season.
Nevertheless, the fans who will visit the tennis festival in Ostravar Arena will not be deprived of a quality cast. Among the leading Czech players, Barbora Krejčíková, Petra Kvitová and Karolína Muchová will be present.
Several Grand Slam champions will also show their tennis magic. Angelique Kerber, Iga Swiatek and Jelena Ostapenko will try the Ostrava surface.
Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and Roland Garros finalist Anastasija Pavlyuchenkova will also be present.
The tournament’s total endowment is $565,530. The tournament kicks off with qualifying this weekend, with the main event starting on Monday. The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
