Novak Djokovic, one of the best tennis players in the world, was the biggest favourite to win the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. But he returns home empty-handed. How did that happen?
In the semi-finals of the Olympic tournament, the Serbian tennis player faced the German Alexander Zverev, who was beyond his strength. The Serbian took the first set 6:1. In the second set, however, he lost and lost 3::6. The deciding set was clearly in the hands of Zverev, who won it 6::1.
It was clear that the favourite would not make it to the Olympic final. But the chance for a medal remained. In the duel for bronze he faced the Spanish tennis player Carreňo Busta. Novak Djokovic entered the duel as a clear favourite.
However, the first set was won by the Spaniard 6::4. The second set was decided by a tie-break, which Djokovic won. The bronze medal match was to be decided in the third set. Surprisingly, the Spaniard won 6: 3. So the tennis superstar was left without a medal.
Djokovic’s biggest regret may be that he lost his chance to win the Golden Slam. This is an award given to the tennis player who dominates all the Grand Slams and the Olympics in one year.
Djokovic was poised to win it as he had 3 grand slams to his credit this year. He won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. No tennis player has ever won the Golden Slam. We’ll have to wait at least 3 more years before any such record holder emerges.
There was still a chance for a medal in the mixed doubles where he and his partner, Nina Stojanovic, were to challenge the Australian pair of Barty and Peers. However, the match did not happen at all, as Djokovic had to abandon it early due to an injured shoulder.
Djokovic will not have many fond memories of Tokyo Olympics. Now he has no choice but to heal his injury safely and focus on the rest of the tennis season.
Djokovic already owns one Olympic bronze medal. He won it in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics. The Olympics in Paris will take place in three years, let’s see if Novak Djokovic will still be there. He will be 37 years old by then.
