Barbora Krejčíková and Katerina Siniakova confirmed their role as favourites in the doubles final and celebrated a lifetime success. In the battle for the gold, the Czech pair of Benčičová and Golubičová defeated 7::5 and 6::1 and will take home the most valuable medal from Tokyo. The Czechs have reached a historic milestone that has so far eluded their compatriots. That curse was broken today, and Czech tennis wins its first ever Olympic gold.
The Swiss were the clear underdogs, but they did not shy away from their opponents. The energetic Bencic played particularly well. Both pairs held their serve very confidently and the winner of the opening set was decided by a thrilling endgame.
The Czechs sold their experience and won the first set 7:5. The dream of gold was a little closer again.
The Swiss were in a slump after losing the set and the Czech tennis players took great advantage of it. They quickly took a promising 3:0 lead, only a total failure could have deprived them of the triumph of a lifetime.
The Swiss women still managed to fight back, when they subsequently took the favourites’ serve. But it was too late. The Czechs were able to retaliate immediately and the resistance of their tenacious opponents was finally broken.
Krejcikova and Siniakova won 7-5, 6-1 and became Olympic champions!
All’s well that ends well. This gold is the icing on the cake of a great Czech team. The first gold in history.
Czech tennis players won a total of 2 valuable metals and can leave the venue of the Games with maximum satisfaction. Another day, another medal. Eighth in Tokyo. The medal harvest continues. Keep it up.
