The final of the Billie Jean King Cup women’s team competition will be held in Prague instead of Budapest this year. The last time this competition was played here, still under the name Fed Cup, was in 2018. And this year, the Czechs will be the main favourites for the title.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced great news for Czech tennis fans on Friday. Thanks to the new format of the competition, it will no longer be played over three days between two teams. Spectators will see 12 countries fighting in four groups of three in the first week of November.

The Czech Republic is seeded in Group D, where it will play Germany and Switzerland. Reigning champions France will face Canada and the Russian Tennis Federation in Group A. Of course, it is a question of what line-ups each national team will prepare, but the Czech Republic should be the number one favourite.

Moreover, there is always a great atmosphere in the O2 Arena. We will see how the epidemiological situation will affect this tradition, as the November date will again record bad numbers. But let’s hope that the event will not be played without spectators.

Senior tennis officials have also commented on the situation. “The O2 Arena has seen some incredible moments during the Billie Jean King Cup over the past decade and I look forward to seeing history being made on this court once again,” said ITF President David Haggerty in an interview with the official website.

The Czech tennis players have 11 titles in the history of the competition and are the second most successful in history after the United States. Between 2011 and 2018, our national team lifted the trophy a total of six times.
