Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the current season, starts on Monday 28 June. In the first round we will find one representative of the Czech Republic, Jiri Vesely. Will he be happy to advance?
Jiří Veselý is currently 71st in the ATP rankings. Despite this, the 27-year-old is the highest ranked tennis player from the Czech Republic and will have to do without his compatriots at Wimbledon.
In 2021, the 2013 Davis Cup winner is not doing well at all. Vesely has played 25 competitive matches so far, losing fourteen of them. The last time he won two matches in a row was in February, when he reached the quarterfinals of the tournament in Melbourne.
His opponent on Monday will be Yannick Hanfmann. The twenty-nine-year-old German-born tennis player is currently ranked 99th in the ATP rankings, with a career high of 92nd.
It has not been a completely successful season for Hanfmann either. His greatest achievement is his participation in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Cagliari. His rehearsal for Wimbledon was not a success as he won only two matches on grass.
So what to bet on? The paper favourite is Jiri Vesely, who is a more experienced player. Moreover, Wimbledon is his favourite Grand Slam, as evidenced by his participation in the eighth finals in 2016 and 2018.
We can expect an even match, which could be decided by the Czech player’s better serve. So I recommend to bet on Vesely to win at an acceptable odds of 1.62.
