There were too many health problems. Bertens will retire after the season
This season will be the last for Kiki Bertens. The Dutchwoman decided to end her career early at the age of 29. The reason for this is a prolonged health problem that has limited her in recent years.
This season will be the last for Kiki Bertens. The Dutchwoman decided to end her career early at the age of 29. The reason for this is a prolonged health problem that has limited her in recent years. Bertens has plans to play at Eastbourne, Wimbledon and the Olympics. After that, she will decide what to do next.
In recent years, the tennis player has been plagued by frequent Achilles heel injuries. That’s why she decided to undergo surgery at the end of last year to solve this problem. But it didn’t.
Bertens never got back to her ideal playing performance and it was sheer agony on her part. She could no longer be competitive and was a mere shadow of the great player of the past.
These problems resulted in this major decision, which is quite logical. Exactly when she will end her career is not entirely clear. Either after the Olympics or at the end of the season. It will depend on how she feels health-wise.
“Hi everyone, I want to share with you one crucial piece of information. I have decided that this will be my last season. I’ve always demanded the best from myself, but the tank is empty. The taste of hard work and the satisfaction of it is definitely gone. I am more than ready for the new chapter that will follow in my life.
Now I want to play tournaments at Eastbourne, Wimbledon and the Olympics. If my body works properly, I will finish this season. I will do everything I can to finish my career in the best possible way,” he wrote on his Instagram.
Bertens is a former No. 4 player in the world, winning 10 tournament titles during her career.
