We have had another round of the royal Moto GP cubature at the Sachsenring, and it was indeed a wonderful spectacle! Márquez confirmed his unambiguous dominance in Germany, while the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders achieved a great result.
Already in the warm-up, when the riders were warming up for Sunday’s Grand Prix, Pol Espargaro fell for the second time during the race weekend. He had a really hard time getting up off the track, but fortunately was able to make an impact on the race. However, the crash did not add much to his psyche.
Marc Márquez made an excellent start to this race, moving up from fifth to second after starting the race in fifth position. Johann Zarco, who started from pole position, dropped to third place after the start, while Fabio Quartararo dropped from second to fourth.
Valentino Rossi had a tragic start to the race. The legendary rider was up to nineteenth after the first few corners.
On the second lap of the German Grand Prix, Márquez even got into first position ahead of Aleix Espargar, who took the lead after the start. After that, and during the next lap, the two did not give anything away and we watched a wonderful duel for the top position.
Apart from Rossi, Francesco Bagnaia also had a bad start to Sunday’s race and was up to 16th on lap three. Maverick Viñales, Quartara’s teammate, had a disastrous race. The twenty-six year old driver was sovereignly last.
On lap five, we witnessed a collision between Danilo Petrucci and Alex Márquez, who collided in turn one, bringing an early end to their run in this Grand Prix.
A lap later, another rider dropped off the start list, namely Lorenzo Savadori on an Aprilia motorcycle. Savadori leaned his bike too much and crashed in turn 10.
On lap nine, Aleix Espargaro started to stiffen up badly, losing two more places in a matter of moments. He was passed by Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira. It was the Portuguese driver who confirmed his incredible phase, with a beautiful manoeuvre to get ahead of Espargaro into third place.
At the start of the tenth circuit, the Spaniard Márquez was increasing his lead at the front, at this point he had a 1.5 second advantage over second-placed Miller.
A lap later, however, the Australian Miller lost his second place. He was overtaken by Portugal’s Oliveira, who began his pursuit of leader Márquez. He increased his lead to two seconds on the next lap.
Over the next three laps, Márquez and Oliveira traded the fastest laps of the race. Heading up the order was Bagnaia on the Ducati, who was already in eleventh place at the end of the sixteenth lap.
However, Márquez maintained a solid lead over Oliveira. For this race, the aerodynamics on Márquez’s Honda had been modified on the bonnet, which obviously had the desired effect of providing very good cornering grip.
On lap nineteen, Quartararo charged down the waterfall at Miller and captured his third position. However, the gap to second-placed Oliveira was large, namely three seconds. Meanwhile, Brad Binder, Oliveira’s teammate, had also moved up to sixth. Zarco dropped all the way down to seventh.
Bagnaia continued his pursuit run, and on lap 23 of the race he was already ninth overall. At the front of the race, Márquez held his lead over Oliveira, while the Portuguese rider increased his lead over third-placed Quartararo to a safe four seconds.
By the end of the race, there was no change in the lead. Marc Márquez thus confirmed his dominance at the Sachsenring, and even after ten years, he has not found his conqueror! Oliveira is also in incredible form, finishing second ahead of Quartara in third.
With two laps to go, Binder was still in fourth place and Bagnaia put in an absolutely superb performance to end his German Grand Prix in a solid fifth place.
Miller crossed the line sixth in the standings ahead of Aleix Espargaro, with Pramac Racing’s Zarco dropping to eighth after starting from pole position. Ninth went to Joan Mir on a Suzuki motorcycle, with Pol Espargaro rounding out the top ten.
Eleventh on the results list was Alex Rins, twelfth was Jorge Martin, thirteenth was Takaaki Nakagami, fourteenth was Rossi and the last point for fifteenth place was taken by Luca Marini in the service of the Esponsorama Racing team.
In his post-race interview, race winner Márquez was very impressed and described the de facto race. He wanted to be as close to the podium as possible in Germany after the big injury he suffered last year. But with another win, Márquez can be considered the true king of the Sachsenring.
