Karolína Muchová is currently ranked 27th in the WTA rankings. But that will change next Monday. She is already assured of moving up at least five places. If she manages to win the whole tournament, she would move up to 12th.
At the Melbourne tournament she took on Karolina Pliskova, Jelena Ostapenko and Elise Mertens. But the biggest scalp is Ash Barty, the world number one, who was playing on home soil.
Moreover, Muchova had to turn around an unfavourable match several times, clearly showing her mental well-being.
She will play Jennifer Brady for a place in the Grand Slam final. The 25-year-old American is ranked 25th in the WTA rankings.
She, like Karolina Muchova, also made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open for the first time in her career. However, we must point out that she had much easier opponents.
Bolsova Zadoin, Brengle, Juvan, Vekic and Pegula were successively in her way. But that is not to knock her performance, which undoubtedly stands up to a tougher standard.
So what’s your bet? Although the odds don’t quite match it, I would see the Olomouc native as the paper favourite here.
The latter also managed to win the only duel between these rivals so far in 2019. On clay in Prague, Muchová won 2:1.
Karolína Muchová’s slight advantage could also be the fact that her match on Wednesday ended about two hours earlier. That will give her more time to recover.
In the final, the winner of this clash will face the better of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. The semi-final battles will be televised by Eurosport.
