Manchester United is undoubtedly one of the most popular clubs in the world. In England, it is the biggest ever in terms of fans, but it struggles on the pitch.
The Reds supporters have long been sacking the Glazer owners who have held on to the club for 17 long years. Now, however, it appears that this long ordeal could be coming to an end.
“The board of directors is beginning a process of exploring strategic alternatives for the club.
The goal of this process is to enhance the future growth of the club and the ultimate goal is to prepare the club to take advantage of opportunities both on the field and from a business perspective,” the club announced on its website.
The board is charged with considering all strategic alternatives, which include new investment in the club or an actual sale.
“This will include consideration of several initiatives to strengthen the club, including the redevelopment of the stadium and infrastructure and the expansion of the club’s commercial activities globally, each of which will be designed to enhance the long-term success of the club’s men’s, women’s and academy teams and benefit the fans and other stakeholders,” the statement said.
So there are several possible outcomes, but the Glazer family itself recognizes the need to invest in new infrastructure, but also in the team itself.
But the statement also said that there is no guarantee that the sale will actually happen. Further announcements will only be made if a specific transaction is approved.
What is the value of the club anyway? There is talk of £2.15 billion, although the Glazers are asking for £5-9 billion according to Sky News. “Manchester United’s strength lies in the passion and loyalty of our global community of 1.1 billion fans and supporters. As we look to build on the club’s successful history, the board has approved a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives.
We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximises the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.
Throughout this process, we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders and various stakeholders,” said a statement from the Glazer family on United’s website.
