Erik ten Hag took over Manchester United in the summer with a clear objective and a clear concept. He is expected to return the club to the top ranks of not only English football. But to do that, he needs time and funds.
Of course, his plans also include player turnover and this has already been slowly happening over the summer, with some players leaving Old Trafford and several arriving in Manchester for considerable sums.
There was a lot of talk about the future of Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire. Ronaldo was supposed to want to leave, Maguire did not. In the end, both remained in the team and it is widely expected that neither will be at Old Trafford next season.
In the case of Maguire in particular, the situation is becoming increasingly clear. The captain has turned into a player who is not even third choice as a stopper. He is really only used in an emergency when the Dutch coach has no choice.
Nevertheless, Maguire has made the World Cup squad and can prove in an England jersey that he deserves a place in a big club. In that respect, the tournament in Qatar could be crucial for him. He is 29 years old and has lost his reputation as a quality defender in Manchester.
The Red Devils brought him from Leicester for almost 90 million euros. Now, according to Transfermarkt, his value is not even half that. It is estimated at just 30 million. Manchester United will definitely not get what they paid for him.
However, according to The Guardian, leaving for free is out of the question. The 20-time English champion wants to at least partially charge him so that he can use the money to pay someone who fits more of the Hague’s philosophy.
The English outfit pays Maguire nearly £217,000 a week. The former Leicester defender has a contract until 2026. Despite the fact that ten Hag acknowledges his professionalism, his departure is inevitable if only for financial relief.
