The night from Saturday to Sunday offered combat sports fans a good dose of entertainment. Several interesting events took place and there was a lot to watch. Boxing was also on the agenda, which provided the most bizarre ending to a fight all night.
Fans of combat sports had a feast this weekend. MMA featured tournaments from Polish organization KSW, another RFA gala was on the schedule, one of the most interesting cards of the year was offered by the UFC, and there was also boxing overseas outside of MMA.
The American city of Cleveland hosted a boxing gala under the WBA banner and there was also a fight between two promising fighters. Montana Love, a native of Cleveland, took on Steve Sparko on his home turf.
Montana went into the fight undefeated, while Spark had two losses. However, their match was evenly matched according to the scoring judges. In fact, right up until the end, two of the three saw the match tied.
But that didn’t really matter. In the sixth round, the match was stopped. First, there was a clash of heads, which was worse for the home team’s Love, who developed a laceration near his eye.
The fight was in danger of being stopped. The doctor, however, let Love go with the warning that one punch could open the wound properly. In addition, the American said he was having trouble seeing. So it was obvious that Love’s condition would be under the scrutiny of the doctors.
But in the end, there was no need. As soon as the fight started, Love pushed his opponent to the ropes and even “kicked” him over the ropes out of the ring. Spark, however, showed almost superb parkour skills and made it out gracefully without injury.
But it was too much for the referee. Love was disqualified. Promoter Eddie Hearn agreed.
Love, however, has a chance to appeal the disqualification. The result of the match can be converted to a “no contest” at most.
