Courtois still out, a disaster for Real fans ahead of El Clásico. Ancelotti reveals where he stands
He is one of Real Madrid’s most important links. When the defence fails, Thibaut Courtois is always ready in goal, and he has risen to the status of probably the best goalkeeper on the planet. He is one of Real Madrid’s most important links. When the defence fails, Thibaut Courtois is always ready in goal, and he has risen to the status of probably the best goalkeeper on the planet. However, he is still on the sidelines ahead of the important El Clásico, which scares Real Madrid fans a little bit.
Playing with Courtois and without him is a huge difference for Real Madrid. The young Andriy Lunin is also of quality and deserves his chance, but the lanky Belgian gives the team complete peace of mind, always picking up an extra touch and also helping a lot in the midfield, which he has improved tremendously since arriving from England.
However, he brought back a sciatic nerve injury from the national team meeting, which is a very unpleasant thing. The worst part of the whole thing is that no doctor in the world can say when the player will recover. It’s an individual injury, one heals in a few days, the other in a few months.
Courtois has been out of action since the end of September and has missed three games so far. In the very first one, Real Madrid lost, drew at home with Osasuna and lost their winning streak. The cashed-in goal is rather hard to blame Lunin for, but who knows if Courtois could have reached it.
Los Blancos managed to win the next two games, beating Shakhtar 2-1 and Getafe 1-0, and Lunin scored his first clean sheet. Lunin will play against Shakhtar in the Champions League on Wednesday, which caused panic among some fans before Sunday’s El Clásico.
However, coach Carlo Ancelotti is calming it down. “He is much better, I spoke to him before we left Madrid. He will start training on Thursday to be ready for Sunday,” Ancelotti told a news conference.
Courtois should be ready for the important match against Barcelona. The question is whether he will be affected by the fortnight’s absence, but the goalkeeper should not be affected as much as the players.
