The name of Erling Haalado has been in the news lately, as he is having a great start to the season and scoring one goal after another. However, he has a strong competitor in the Dutch league. Cody Gakpo, who plays for PSV Eindhoven.
Cody Gakpo is enjoying his best start of the season so far at the age of twenty-three. In eight league games he has scored eight times and added six assists. He hasn’t lost his touch in the European Cups either, scoring three times and assisting twice on goal.
Gakpo put in a brilliant performance in the Super Cup final against Ajax, before the start of the league. With two assists and one goal, he led PSV Eindhoven to a 5-3 win.
In total, this means 22 points for Gakpo (12 goals and 10 assists). In this statistic he is on the same level as Erling Haaland from Manchester City (19+3), and he plays as a winger.
Thanks to his performance, Gakpo has also made his way into the national team. For the Oranjes, he has split the net in games against Wales and Poland. In an important match against Belgium, he assisted the only goal and made a significant contribution to his country’s progression to the UEFA Nations League play-offs.
This is one of the reasons why he has been on the radar of Manchester United. There was speculation about his possible transfer during the summer, but in the end the Red Devils chose Antony, and after initial feelers there was no official offer.
Nevertheless, according to Forbes, Gakp’s transfer to Old Trafford is still in play. Manchester United remain interested in the player and should even make him their number one target for the next transfer window.
Both players will be able to add to their number of goals scored and assists this weekend. While PSV will play away against Heerenveen on Sunday, Manchester City will be at home against Southampton on Saturday.
