The Slovak national team played Azerbaijan in the 5th round of the group stage of League C. However, the home team not only failed to achieve the desired victory, but recorded another very shameful result. Slovakia lost to Azerbaijan 1:2.
Being a Slovak football fan is probably a very difficult thing to be these days. However, the Slovaks entered the Nations League well, beating Belarus 1-0 in the first round of the group stage. Twenty-year-old Groningen midfielder Tomas Suslov scored for the visitors in the 61st minute.
But then came the first embarrassment, when Slovakia not only failed to build on that victory in the next match, but even lost 0:1 to Kazakhstan on home soil.
The next game was played on the ground of Azerbaijan, where Vladimir Weiss gave the Slovaks hope. Later, VAR disallowed a goal by Lukáš Haraslín, but Slovakia won 1:0.
13. however, in June another crash came on the ground of Kazakhstan and the Slovak national team left Central Asia in disgrace. Again.
Samuel Slovák’s men scored only one goal and lost 1:2 to Kazakhstan, with Matúš Bero scoring the only goal in the 51st minute, which only reduced the score. The last time the Slovaks were embarrassed was on Thursday 22 September, when they lost 1:2 at home to Azerbaijan.
In the 93rd minute Erik Jirka equalised from a penalty to 1:1, but two minutes later Hojjat Haghverdi decided the match. Slovakia will not lose the League C, and therefore the third highest category, but the results and the position in the table is simply a reprehensible matter.
It is now clear that Kazakhstan, who have collected 13 points after 5 matches, will be promoted to League B. Azerbaijan are currently in second place with 7 points, Slovakia are third with six points. Belarus is last with only two points.
It should be noted that the Slovak national team has been led by three coaches during the last five matches. Apart from the Slovakian, the first two matches were coached by Stefan Tarkovic, while the home loss against Azerbaijan was watched from the bench by Italian strategist Francesco Calzona.
