France played their next Nations League group stage match on Thursday 22nd September and this time they needed a real workout. And they did just that, beating Austria 2-0. Kylian Mbappé scored a great goal in this match.
The French national team entered the match with Austria very well, when the quick-footed Mbappé got the ball behind the back of goalkeeper Patrick Pentz in the second minute. However, the rush of joy was quickly replaced by sobering sobriety – Mbappé’s goal was disallowed for offside.
France, however, clearly had a lot more to gain from the match and created plenty of chances throughout the first half. However, none of them ended in a goal.
But that changed in the second half. In the 56th minute, the star Mbappé got the ball and opened the scoring with a great solo effort. You can see his parade for yourself in the video below.
Just three minutes later, Olivier Giroud found himself on the ground after a fall in the penalty area, but the referee did not award a penalty.
However, the same man increased France’s lead in the 65th minute. Antoine Griezmann sent a really good centre into the box, which Giroud pounced on and headed into the net – 2: 0.
That was the end of the match. After the previous matches, France finally gave a convincing performance and practically did not let Austria get anywhere. In total, Didier Deschamps’ charges had 22 shooting attempts, 6 of which went between the three posts.
Ahead of the last match of the Nations League group stage, France are currently in third place, having collected just five points from five matches. Mbappé and co will next play against second-placed Denmark, who have 9 points.
Group 1 is then led by Croatia with 10 points, while Austria are the last team on the table with 4 points.
