Better than Pogba? The best 12-year-old footballer in the world?
He was scouted by former Manchester United scout Phil Brogan, who toured a large number of football tournaments or junior clubs. When he first saw him in 2001, he said: ‘I’ve never seen anyone like him. I knew I had found a boy who could go to the top. He was amazing.“
Morrison came to the Red Devils at a very young age and all the coaches sang odes to him. The legendary Sir Alex Fergusson said of him that he was the best 12-year-old footballer he had seen in his lifetime.
Ravel Morrison became part of the famous group, including Lingard and Pogba, that won the FA Youth Cup in 2011. “Purely based on talent, I think Ravel was better than Pogba. Of course Pogba had many qualities, he was athletic and strong. But he couldn’t do the things that Ravel could do. He looked like he was destined to be the best, ” Brogan said.
However, it wasn’t just his agent who gushed over Morrison’s talent. The former United youth captain said, ” Rav could do the most incredible things, both in training and in a game. He ran through five or six players and then outmuscled the goalkeeper. Then he went back to the half and repeated the whole thing.” His other teammate, Gyliano van Vezel, added: ” We thought he was the best, we all wanted to play like him.”
The complex nature and changes of clubs
Of course, as is usually the case, there were problems for Morrison as time went on. He appeared in court several times as a teenager, firstly for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and then for intimidating witnesses in an attempt to stop the victim during a robbery.
The versatile midfielder didn’t have much patience and was annoyed by what he saw as an insufficient playing load at United. The Manchester club’s management eventually decided to sell their star boy to West Ham.
However, even here Morrison failed to make a significant impact. He went on loan to Birmingham, QPR and Cardiff City. After his contract expired, he moved to Lazio, and tried his hand at Mexican Atlas, Swedish team Östersunds and Dutch team ADO Den Haag. In the meantime, he also had stints at Sheffield United and Middlesbrough. Everything changed in the 2021/22 season…
A career restart under Wayne Rooney?
In 2021, Ravel Morisson returned to England, where he played for Derby County in England’s second highest competition. During the year he played practically all the matches. In 36 games he scored four assists and scored four times. The relationship with former Manchester City footballer Wayne Rooney, who coached Derby, was also a key factor.
So a year later, it was no surprise that Rooney would make his way to D.C. United “took Morrison with him“. The Jamaican international, who previously played for England’s U21s, is playing in the MLS this season. He has already managed to play in 12 games and scored one exhibition goal.
Will the still twenty-nine-year-old footballer start his career overseas under the tutelage of Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney?
