New details on Mbappé’s contract: It ends a year early, he decides if he wants to extend it
Kylian Mbappé is the master of his destiny. Literally. To keep him in the summer, PSG gave him almost unlimited powers in addition to a huge paycheck. Now it has come to light that he will decide the length of his contract, perhaps the only player in the world to do so.
Kylian Mbappé is the master of his destiny. Literally. To keep him in the summer, PSG gave him almost unlimited powers in addition to a huge paycheck. Now it has come to light that he will decide the length of his contract, perhaps the only player in the world to do so.
It was the most interesting transfer saga that stretched from last summer to June 2022. Will Kylian Mbappé stay at PSG or will he leave for Real Madrid?
The Frenchman himself admitted in an interview that last summer he wanted to go to Madrid at any cost and fulfill his childhood dream, as he has been a fan of the royal club since he was a kid.
But the Parisian club did not let him go and Mbappé stayed at PSG. However, in June 2022 his contract was up and the 22-year-old Frenchman could leave for Real for free and without any negotiations. Almost the entire football world expected this to happen.
But Mbappé eventually decided to sign a new contract in Paris under great pressure, even from President Emmanuel Macron. As well as a generous salary and an extreme bonus, it also gave him extra-football powers, reportedly giving him a say in the selection of the coach and the choice of reinforcements.
Contract with an option
And now it has emerged that PSG have even prepared a tailor-made contract for him. Officially, it was announced that Mbappé signed a 3-year contract until 2025, but that’s not quite the case.
The prestigious French newspaper L’Equipe came up with the information that Mbappé’s contract expires in 2024, the last year is with an option. In football, it is standard that the option must be confirmed by both parties, or only the club can extend the contract.
Here, however, it is the other way around and only Mbappé can activate the option for another year. And so in two years’ time, Real Madrid could try again to get their transfer target for free.
“I’ve never played for Real Madrid, but I feel like it’s my home,” the 22-year-old striker was quoted as saying last week.
But the question is whether Real Madrid fans would still accept him, and so would president Florentino Pérez, who is known for his pride.
