The Slovak football team has a new coach, on Friday the Italian Francesco Calzona, who has experience from Naples, will be officially introduced. He has signed a contract with the federation until the end of 2023, but if he qualifies for the Euros with the team, it will be automatically extended.
When Štefan Tarkovič quit the team in June 2022, a replacement was sought to put Slovakia back among the wider elite of European football.
It is now clear who that new coach will be and it is fifty-three-year-old Italian Francesco Calzona, who has signed a contract with the Slovak Football Association until the end of next year.
The contract will even be extended in the event of promotion to the Euros. The executive committee approved the new coach per rollam. A press conference and the introduction of the coach is scheduled for Friday.
It will happen at 10::30 in the SFZ building. In addition to the new coach, SFZ president Ján Kováčik and vice president Karol Belaník will be there.
But who is the new coach of the Slovak national team? His almost entire coaching career is linked to Maurizio Sarri, whom he assisted at Perugia, Alessandria, Sorrento, Empoli and Napoli.
He was subsequently assistant to Eusebio Di Francesco at Cagliari and left his position as technical coach at Napoli under coach Luciano Spaletti this summer after a one-year engagement.
