When Casemiro’s departure was announced earlier in the week, many fans were saddened as he is an unquestioned icon of the club. However, in terms of the game, Real Madrid don’t have to be so sad anymore, as Aurélien Tchouaméni arrived early and immediately showed huge potential.
Real Madrid have been almost spending nothing in recent years. The last time Hazard, Jovic, Militao, Mendy and Rodrygo came in the summer of 2019, then came a big drought.
In the 2020/21 season, Real didn’t spend a euro in the summer or winter, in the summer of 2021 David Alaba came for free and at the end of the transfer window Eduardo Camavinga came for 35 million euros. He didn’t come in the winter, Antonio Rüdiger arrived for free before the new season.
So in five transfer periods, Real spent only 35 million euros. And then took 80 million euros and sent it to Monaco for Aurélien Tchouaméni. That’s already saying something about how much Madrid wanted him. And how they prepared a replacement for Casemiro in advance, although nobody probably expected the Brazilian to leave so soon.
He eventually went to Manchester United (with bonuses) for 80 million euros as well, so Los Blancos’ investment in the Frenchman was immediately returned. And they rejuvenated the defensive midfielder position by 8 years.
There was a slight concern whether the 22-year-old Tchouaméni had grown to such quality to replace Casemiro. And in the very first game he showed that he probably has.
Against Celta Vigo he started in the starting line-up and gave a fantastic performance. He was one of the best players on the pitch, took the ball away from the opponent nine times, cleared the ball four times, punched the ball out three times and made three defensive saves.
His performance helped Real to win 4:1. He also had a big part in the last goal, when he won the ball in the Real Madrid penalty area and took it to the attacking half, where he found Eden Hazard, who passed it to Valverde for the goal.
