The last and most important step before the Victorians. If they beat Karabakh, they will advance to the Champions League group stage and the players will fulfil their big dream. What did stopper Luděk Pernica say before the rematch?
Viktoria Plzeň’s return leg against Karabakh in the Champions League play-offs will start at 9pm at the Doosan Arena. The opening match did not offer a goal, so everything is open.
But Viktoria is the favourite, at least according to domestic bookmakers. Its chances are boosted by the home environment and a sold-out stadium with 11,000 fans.
“To fight for promotion from so many preliminary rounds is really difficult and a successful finish would be sweet. At club level, the Champions League is the most you can do. I’m looking forward to it tremendously, we will do everything to qualify,” Luděk Pernica said at the press conference.
It must be added, however, that the team from Azerbaijan was the better team in the opening match, taking a total of seven shots on goal, and if it wasn’t for the excellent Jindřich Stanek, the result could have been different.
“They have some weaknesses at the back where they are not that solid. We will definitely focus on standard situations again. It can be one of the keys to success, they are our strength,” Pernica pointed out.
If Viktoria fail to win the match, they will not lose the European Cup. Disappointment would definitely prevail in such a case, but the Europa League group stage is certainly not to be discarded.
