Slavia will face a crucial rematch in the Conference Championship on Thursday night. They lost 1:2 in Poland and have to make up for a one-goal loss in Eden. If they don’t make it through the match, they will be without European Cups.
Unusually for the first time in three years, the Sesshivans did not play Champions League qualification or even Europa League this year, and due to a poor national coefficient they went from second place to the Conference League.
In the second preliminary round, they faced Gibraltar’s underdog St. Joseph’s, whom they thrashed 4-0 and 7-0. They then faced Panathinaikos of Greece, whom they beat 2-0 and 1-1. In the third round, however, came the most difficult obstacle.
Raków Częstochowa showed in the first match why those familiar with the Polish environment warned that Raków was, in hyperbole, “the Polish Slavia”. Marek Papszun’s team surprised the Susians with their own weapons – aggression, high attacking and constant movement.
Ivi Lopez, the best player of the Polish team, opened the scoring with a beautiful shot and he will be the one Slavia will have to watch out for in the rematch. Due to Oscar Dorley’s injury, Trpišovský has two options.
David Jurasek is perfect for the offense, but the coach has reservations about him on defense. That’s why he put Srdjan Plavsic in the first game. But he is not an expert on defense either and for a change he made a mistake on Raków’s second goal.
Slavia also has a problem at the top of the attack. The cup demon Yira Sor is still on the sack, Václav Jurečka is not available either. Ondrej Lingr did not do well in the first match against tall stoppers. So the option of Stanislav Teclo, who scored a hat-trick at the weekend, is an option.
Raków, as is the habit of Polish teams before the cup preliminary rounds, postponed the weekend league match, so they saved their strength.
Trpišovský tried to spread the load over the majority of the squad and thanks to a high 7:0 win the Red and Whites were in a positive mood for the rematch.
And what to expect from the match? Slavia must fly at their opponents and score at least one goal to take the match into extra time. If they want to advance straight away, they must win by two goals.
That’s why I think Slavia will take advantage of the overwhelming home pressure and score at least two goals.
