Viktoria Plzeň played out a valuable 0:0 draw at the ground of Karabakh in Azerbaijan on Wednesday and took an ideal result to the home rematch. What did the match show towards the next matches of the Fortuna Liga champion?
Stanek extinguished the unquenchable
Jindřich Staněk is currently clearly the best goalkeeper in the league. He has scored at least two goals in all three preliminary rounds, he also made important saves against Hradec Králové and Pardubice, and even caught a penalty against Teplice.
Even in Azerbaijan he had work to do and there was no shortage of it. In the sixth minute he defused a double chance, after the change of sides he caught two more goals. The man of the match, without whom Viktoria would not have taken home a goalless draw.
Mosquera to calm down for the rematch
As coach Frantisek Straka aptly noted in the Nova Sport studio before the game, Jhon Mosquera has to keep his nerves in check and then he is a great player. However, the Colombian winger failed to do that, he saw an unnecessary yellow card for unsporting behaviour in the first half, and a straight red could have easily come.
Moreover, Mosquera subsequently fouled twice on the verge of a second yellow card, something he must avoid in the rematch. It was because of this that he was substituted as the first Victorian. Nine of the ten referees would have sent him off in the middle, either in the first or second half.
Sick mainstay
Before last season, few would have expected Tomas Chorý to lead Plzen to the Champions League a year later. However, the number 3 striker has become a mainstay in one year and a real leader of the team.
Chorý is at the tip of the attack and he is indispensable for Michal Bílek in this respect. In the first half he found Jan Kopic with a good header, it could have been a decisive goal. Looking back at the situation around Václav Jurecka and Jan Kuchta, the national team nomination is offered for the next meeting.
