The pros and cons of Casemiro: Why should he stay at Real Madrid and why go to Manchester United?
Casemiro is one of Real Madrid’s key players, he scored the winning goal in the UEFA Super Cup win over Frankfurt last week, so no one would have thought of his departure. But Manchester United have come up with a staggeringly generous offer and the Brazilian has a big decision to make.
Casemiro is one of Real Madrid’s key players, he scored the winning goal in the UEFA Super Cup win over Frankfurt last week, so no one would have thought of his departure. But Manchester United have come up with a staggeringly generous offer and the Brazilian has a big decision to make.
PRO to stay at Real Madrid
On the face of it, a clear-cut case. Casemiro is a key player for the King of Europe, historically the most successful team in football. He has been at Real Madrid since 2013, along with Modric and Kroos he has formed one of the best midfield formations in history, he is considered a club legend.
The fans love him, he has a privileged position and is one of the four captains of the team. Moreover, he recently won the Champions League with the club and in the new season Los Blancos will be favourites to win La Liga and the Champions League again.
In addition to the footballing side, we must also look at the human side. As a Brazilian, he is having a wonderful time in beautiful Madrid, from the weather to the lifestyle, nothing is lacking in the Spanish capital. Life in rainy and not very nice Manchester is a night and day difference.
So why would he change everything for a completely dysfunctional Manchester United, where he wouldn’t even play in the Champions League or prospectively challenge for the Premier League title?
PRO to leaving Manchester United
Time cannot be stopped and Casemiro is no longer the youngest. Although he is still only 30, Real have already found a replacement for him. Eduardo Camavinga already came in last year, and in the summer Florentino Pérez brought in the super-talented Aurélien Tchouaméni to replace Casemiro for €80 million.
Although Casemiro would still play the most important games in the starting line-up, his playing time would gradually be cut. He would no longer be such an indispensable player, Ancelotti would try to integrate Tchouaméni as much as possible, you don’t leave such an expensive reinforcement on the bench all season.
Instead, at United he would instantly become a key and almost irreplaceable player on whom the entire defensive game would rest. This privileged position, which he had for the last 8 years in Madrid, he will not have anymore after the arrival of hungry youngsters.
The next and logical reason the Red Devils are trying to lure Casemiro is money. Manchester United would double the Brazilian’s salary, which would now be 430,000 euros per week. That’s already a hefty sum that could entice the São Paulo native into a transfer.
The other thing is the longer certainty. Casemiro is currently under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2025. At that point he will be 33 years old and from that age onwards, president Florentino Pérez only hands out one-year contracts, by performing well in the new year the player can ask for another one-year deal.
He is relentless with this condition and usually doesn’t give in to even the biggest stars. Last year, captain, legend and long-time leader Sergio Ramos asked for a two-year contract at the age of 35, Pérez offered only one year and didn’t budge, so Ramos left for PSG.
But Manchester would have extended Casemiro’s contract until 2027, so he would have had a fat five-year deal ahead of him.
Moreover, being at the Red Devils’ projected rise may be a challenge Casemiro will want to jump at. He has already won everything he can at Real Madrid, dominated the Champions League five times, become an icon for the club and already his legacy is indelible in white history.
However, former teammates Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo would probably warn their friend against going to Old Trafford, as they would currently prefer to disappear back to Madrid.
Casemiro is thus facing a big decision that will define the last phase of his career. Will he stay loyal to the white colours, or will he go for a challenge in the Premier League?
