Will Timo Werner return to Leipzig? That is a question that no one knows the answer to yet, but the whole matter should be decided very soon. According to the latest reports, the German striker is in contact with Red Bull Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. Will there be a transfer?
Werner first transferred to Leipzig in 2016 when his representatives scouted him at Stuttgart. The fourth team of the previous season paid over €22 million for Werner back then, the now 26-year-old striker spent the next four years in Leipzig.
1. however, on July 2020, he decided to leave and move to England, specifically to Chelsea of London, who sent €53 million to Leipzig for him.
However, in the blue jersey, Werner is nowhere near the form he possessed in his previous engagement.
In Leipzig’s colours, Werner scored 93 goals and added 40 assists in 158 games, while for Chelsea the Stuttgart native played in 89 games across all competitions, scoring 23 goals and assisting 21 more.
Yes, they’re definitely not bad numbers. But Chelsea simply expected more from the very talented German striker. According to reports from German newspaper Bulinews, Werner is in contact with Leipzig CEO Mintzlaff, although this potential transfer reportedly looks unlikely.
The reason for this is the money Werner will make at Chelsea. Indeed, the German striker currently earns €20 million a year and Leipzig would be able to pay him no more than a third of that amount.
In any case, the 26-year-old Werner has made no secret of the fact that he would like to receive more playing space. His situation is now being monitored by two other clubs – Newcastle United and Juventus Turin.
