Clubs’ success is not only measured on the pitch these days, but the marketing power of the club is also playing an increasingly important role. The sale of club products, so-called ‘merchandising’, plays an increasingly important role in the club’s budget. And especially the sale of jerseys.
PSG is a great example. After Lionel Messi’s arrival in Paris last year, the club sold more than one million jerseys for the first time in its history. Of these, 60% were with the number 30 and the name Messi on the back. The data was provided by the club itself.
In this context, Kiliagon on Amazon analysed the sales of jerseys in four European leagues: England, Spain, Italy and France. Which team sold the most jerseys?
1. Real Madrid
No big surprise, Real Madrid is one of the narrow top of the biggest and most famous clubs on the planet, with fans all over the world. It’s a testament to the club’s size that last year Real brought in no reinforcements apart from Alaba and Camavinga, which also affects sales (see Messi) and yet Los Blancos made the most money.
The royal club collected 3.3 million euros from the sale of jerseys alone. The most sold jerseys were those of Benzema, Vinícius and Modric.
2. PSG
In second place we find PSG, which is very popular in Paris. And if you add global star Lionel Messi, Morocco’s darling Achraf Hakimi or Spanish favourite Sergio Ramos to the mix, plus Neymar and Mbappé, you have big sales.
PSG invoiced 2.2 million euros, with Messi logically earning the most from the jersey, followed by Neymar and Mbappé.
3. AC Milan
In third place is the Italian phenomenon and Serie A winner, AC Milan. The former dreaded European champion is back on top after years of decline and wants to succeed in the Champions League next year in addition to the Italian league.
The San Siro side collected €1.5 million from the sale of jerseys, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s being the biggest seller.
