The FA Community Shield kicked off a new season of English football this year. The best two English teams of recent years – Manchester City and Liverpool – competed in it.
Citizens were the slight favourites, but they did not live up to their role. They didn’t put in a bad performance, they kept the ball more, had more shooting attempts and generally lived up to their style of play. However, Liverpool scored more goals.
In the 21st minute, Trent Alexander Arnold opened the scoring with a beautiful shot from outside the sixteen after a pass from Mohamed Salah.
The second goal of the match was scored by Julián Álvarez, who equalised in the 70th minute to make it 1-1. It was his first competitive goal for Manchester City.
In the 83rd minute, Salah scored from the penalty spot to silence his critics in the 94th minute.
It was Manchester City who burned several of their chances. Among the unlucky ones was the much-vaunted sharpshooter Erling Haaland, who we are not used to such scorching methods. Had he converted the chance, the winner would not have changed, but it is still unexpected.
Liverpool won 3-1 to win their first trophy of the season. He certainly won’t want it to be the last.
