Champions League
PSG offered Vinícius a huge package to not sign with Real Madrid. But the Brazilian remained loyal to Los Blancos
You can hardly find more better young men in the world right now than Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian winger had the season of his life, refereeing the Champions League final and helping Real Madrid to a double. And despite often making his warm relationship with the club known, PSG have struggled to tempt him into their service.
You can hardly find more better young men in the world right now than Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian winger had the season of his life, refereeing the Champions League final and helping Real Madrid to a double. And despite often making his warm relationship with the club known, PSG have struggled to tempt him into their service.
Vinícius arrived in Madrid in 2018 and started playing for the A-team almost immediately. Everyone saw huge potential in the 18-year-old, but it still remained locked away in some mysterious way.
Everyone saw his lightning acceleration and incredible speed, as well as his amazing dribbling between opposing players. But as a Real Madrid winger, he lacked productivity. He was scoring terribly few points, throwing away chances and then his performance and confidence went down.
But the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti seemed to untie Vinícius’ legs. And he has finally demonstrated why President Florentino Pérez trusted him so much.
Vinícius scored 22 goals, added 16 assists and, most importantly, decided the Champions League final with a single goal. At the age of 21, he is now one of the most expensive and possibly the best players in the world.
New contract
At the Santiago Bernabéu, he takes almost the least of all players. He is still on the rookie contract he got when he arrived and he was in no hurry to get a new one.
“I’m not in a hurry for a new contract. It’s not about money for me, when the right moment comes we will sign a new one. Now I’m just concentrating on football,” Vinícius said during the spring.
Of course, Real Madrid are preparing a contract that will shoot him into the financial elite. He currently receives 3.2 million euros a year, and the new contract will be worth 10 million euros. His current buyout clause was €350 million, it will currently rise to €1 billion to discourage Real from state-owned clubs like PSG.
PSG’s bold attempt
Indeed, a literal war has flared up between Real Madrid and PSG over the past year. The (non-)arrival of Mbappé, the transfer of Ramos, the differing views on the Super League and, most importantly, the heated Champions League eighth-final were all to blame.
Los Blancos tried to get Mbappé for free, which PSG considered, to put it politely, wrong. The Parisian club eventually overpaid for the striker and he remained under the Eiffel Tower, but the hot blood between the two teams remained.
And PSG tried to take what they had from Real. In fact, Vinícius’ current contact expires in 2024 and the French club, according to Marca, came to the Brazilian with an offer of 40 million euros not to extend with Real Madrid. PSG could thus get him for free in two years.
But here he stumbled, because Vinícius is a big heartthrob of Real Madrid, from which he certainly has no plans to leave. So he turned PSG down and will soon sign a contract in the Spanish capital until 2028.
