The most embarrassingly underpaid game in history? A footballer kicked a penalty to the corner flag
Unfortunately, there has always been match-fixing in football, especially for betting, on which certain people then make huge money. Sometimes the players do it so cleverly that you can’t even tell, but that’s not the case here. In fact, a Nigerian footballer has made a fool of himself.
Unfortunately, there has always been match-fixing in football, especially for betting, on which certain people then make huge money. Sometimes the players do it so cleverly that you can’t even tell, but that’s not the case here. In fact, a Nigerian footballer has made a fool of himself.
Penalties are sometimes a big nerve. In the vast majority of cases, they end up in the goal, but quite often the goalkeeper catches the attempt from eleven yards, and sometimes the ball ends up next to the bar or behind the goal.
However, you’ve probably never seen a ball end up on the corner flag before. If you run straight towards the goal, it’s almost physically impossible, yet one player managed to do it.
In fact, there was a comical situation in Nigeria’s Ogun State FA Cup. The match between Remo and Ljebu United ended in a goalless draw, leading to a penalty shootout.
However, it was there as if the Remo players were instructed what to do. It started with the goalkeeper standing motionless in the middle for all the penalties, not even moving an eyebrow.
But the cherry on the cake was put on top by the striker, who was not told how to influence the game. When he made a run, he turned slightly and kicked the penalty to the corner flag. Then he grabbed his head, probably to show how sorry he was for the missed penalty and no one could accuse him of being bribed. In the end, Ljebu won the penalty shootout 3-0.
“If this isn’t a bribed match, I don’t know what is. I don’t know why Nigerian football remains in this state,” complained Ibukun Aluko, a well-known Nigerian journalist.
What is most incomprehensible is why the player played the penalty in such a manner. If he was indeed bribed, as all indications suggest, he could have thrown the penalty any other way. But this blatantly, this is really strange. Maybe he had a bet that the penalty would not cross the goal line and so he kicked the ball away.
