The UFC has answered the call of the fans, Khabib Nurmagomedov and his charge. Thus, Islam Makhachev and the former champion Charles Oliveira, who lost his belt due to not making weight, will fight for the lightweight title.
The Brazilian has long pondered what’s next. He had several offers. Including a potential fight with Conor McGregor, which would make him big money. But in the end, he’ll have the opportunity to fight for his title back.
Makhachev has been asking for a title fight for a long time. After all, he’s entitled to it. After all, he’s won ten fights in a row. However, the fact is that he hasn’t been properly tested by any of the real top lightweights.
While Oliveira has beaten Gaethje, Poirier, Chandler and Ferguson, Makhachev hasn’t fought any of the aforementioned fighters. In the UFC’s lightweight rankings, he is ranked 4th. His toughest opponent in the rankings is now 13th Dan Hooker.
Oliveira, however, is about to have his quality tested. Plus, he had an interesting offer. If he beats Makhachev, he would like to fight Khabib. That’s not likely, but it would be interesting.
The fight between Oliveira and Makhachev will take place at UFC 280, which will be hosted by Abu Dhabi on October 22. Makhachev promises to bring the lightweight title back to Dagestan.
