Argentine striker Lionel Messi has turned down his club’s request to begin negotiations to extend his current contract. PSG will therefore have to wait a little longer to negotiate.
Argentine striker Lionel Messi has turned down his club’s request to begin negotiations to extend his current contract. PSG will therefore have to wait a little longer to negotiate.
Lionel Messi has a contract with the French club until 2023. Currently, it is thus high time to start negotiations for a contract extension and PSG has also made the first step. However, the Argentine does not want to negotiate with the club right now.
As reported by Tribuna.com, Sky Sports was the first to come up with the information. The latter revealed that although Messi is not planning to leave next year yet, he wants to address his future after the World Cup.
The end of the World Cup in Qatar should be the moment when Messi should be willing to negotiate a contract extension. The star footballer believes that the championship will put him in a better negotiating position.
It has to be said that the start of Lionel Messi’s engagement at PSG has been a disappointment for many fans. However, as the games progressed, he started to put in great performances and became productive as well. Last season he collected eleven goals, supported by fourteen assists.
It is no wonder that PSG want to keep hold of this footballer. It makes sense from both a footballing and marketing point of view. According to current information, the Paris club plans to offer Messi a contract extension for another year, until 2024.
However, PSG’s plans could still be affected by the World Cup in Qatar. If the closely watched tournament goes well for Argentina, it is possible that Messi will earn much better terms. However, the reverse could also be the case.
