Sergio Ramos wanted to win the Ballon d’Or for himself. He was chasing the top spots
A new piece of audio has revealed that Sergio Ramos literally begged Luis Rubiales to use his influence to help him win the Ballon d’Or for 2020. The leaked conversation took place between the former Real Madrid captain and the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) between 16 July and 8 August 2020.
He wanted to win the Ballon d’Or. But probably too much. In short, Ramos believed that he had performed above average while helping Real Madrid to another title and that the time was right for him to win the award that crowns the best footballer.
“I think it’s a special year because of the performance I’ve shown this year. I would like you to help me in any way you can and pull the strings with your contacts for the Ballon d’Or,” Sergio Ramos said at the time in a phone call now published by El Confidencial.
He went on to say that he would be grateful for this service for life. Not only for himself, but also for the whole of Spanish football, which he said deserved this award.
The RFEF president’s response was immediate. “I think it’s a good year to have achieved this. The Ballon d’Or doesn’t depend on me, of course, but I will help with whatever I can,” said Luis Rubiales.
Sergio Ramos continued to insist that Rubiales use his influence. “I know it’s not up to you, but your relationships are also key. Infantino is giving this award, which is also very important and it will be hell. Anyway, I hope for your help,” added the current Paris Saint-Germain defender.
Ramos attempted to make a run at Rubiales, but the truth is that the Ballon d’Or is awarded by French magazine France Football, not UEFA or any other governing body of football.
Moreover, the winner was to be decided by a vote in which 180 journalists from around the world award points. However, the awarding of the Ballon d’Or for the best footballer in the world for 2020 was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
