On Thursday, the opening matches of the first round of the European Conference League were played. Slovak, Polish and Finnish clubs got into the game, how did Ružomberok and Dunajská Streda fare and how did Slavia’s potential rivals play?
Ružomberok did well at home. The 2:0 win over Lithuanian Žalgiris Vilnius was managed by a purely Slovak squad, and the players were praised by the fans for giving their all, unlike Slovan Bratislava.
The Slovak coefficient went up a bit thanks to Dunajská Streda. Led by Adrian Guľa, they won 2-1 against Clifnonville from Northern Ireland, despite playing the final ten minutes with ten men after a red card for Brahim Momou.
The battle to see who will face Slavia in the second round took place on Tuesday. Gibraltar’s outsider St. Joseph’s played a good game at home, drawing 0:0 with Northern Ireland’s Larne.
Most of the favourites made it through their Thursday matches. As expected, Alaskhert beat Hamrun of Malta 1: 0, KuPS of Finland beat Dila Gori of Georgia 2: 0, Breidablik of Iceland beat Coloma of Andorra 1: 0 and Mura of Slovenia beat Gheorghe of Moldova 2: 1.
Both Polish representatives also did well. Lechia defeated Macedonian Akademija Pandev 4:1, Pogon Szczecin defeated KR Rejkjavik from Iceland by the same score.
